The centenaries of foundational events of our states and societies bring with them an opportunity to reflect on what we think is important about defining moments in our past…..
The Irish Revival of 1891 to 1922 was an extraordinary era of literary achievement and cultural debate in Ireland. Artists, thinkers and political activists exchanged ideas and opinions about what Ireland was and could become. The Handbook of the Irish Revival traces a line of connection between the pressing issues of the time and the challenges faced by Ireland today. Writings by world famous names such as James Joyce, W.B. Yeats, Maud Gonne and J.M. Synge are published alongside voices of almost forgotten figures.
“Yeats’ vision was of a future Ireland founded on wonder and beauty but built on imagination and possibility...The Abbey Theatre...was founded to sow the seeds and reap the fruits of the Revival. …The dramatic form played a key role in the Revival, both in linking to the mythic past and in bringing… Ireland out into the world” – President of Ireland, M.D. Higgins, 2015
