Jean Erdman died on 4 May 2020. Jean was the creator of the acclaimed dance show “The Coach with the Six Insides”, based on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. Joyce’s book was published in its entirety, on 4 May 1939.
Jean Erdman toured the world, including the Dublin Arts festival, with her dance creations, and her acclaimed performance of Anna Livia Plurabelle. Jean’s inspiring work on global dance traditions, with influences from Irish culture, Joyce, and Yeats, are documented in The Ecstasy of Being: Mythology and the Dance (2017). Jean Erdman, (1916- 2020), the award-winning choreographer, director and dancer, was married to Joseph Campbell (who had co-authored A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake, published in 1944, the first guide to understanding Joyce’s enigmatic work of 1939).
